Camulodunum celebrates the opening of firstsite’s new contemporary art space in Colchester. The exhibition takes its title from the town’s original name when it was established as a Roman legionary fortress and looks back to its rich heritage as the first city of Britain.
Featuring commissioned work by Michaela Eichwald, Aleksandra Mir, Karin Ruggaber and Danh Vo alongside selected works by artists including Ai Weiwei, Subodh Gupta, Richard Hawkins, Barbara Hepworth, Sarah Lucas, Henry Moore, Robert Smithson, Andy Warhol, Rebecca Warren and Bill Woodrow.
Camulodunum draws directly on firstsite’s new architecture and situation in a town where modern buildings neighbour monuments to antiquity. Practices of archaeological excavation, ritual and re-enactment are themes within an exhibition that explores the development of historical narrative and the idea of contemporary culture as future historical record.
The catalogue includes new essays by Louisa Buck, Michelle Cotton and Charlotte Higgins.
