WALK!

The act of walking has grown in importance as a social phenomenon in the 21st century.

Alongside everyday physical movement or the modern moment of recreation and sensual experience, it also touches upon current questions of ecological, global, geopolitical and economic change.

In its group exhibition WALK!, SCHIRN offers an overview of the previously little examined aspect of walking as a practice in contemporary artistic production.

The exhibition addresses the contemporary examination and expansion of Walking Art, whose origins can be traced back to the Minimalism, Land Art and Concept Art of the 1960s.

SCHIRN presents more than 40 international artists, in whose work walking represents an important element.

The approximately 100 photographs, video works, collages, drawings, paintings and sculptures as well as live performances and participative projects in the public realm aesthetically interweave walking with the challenges of today, reflect the current debate surrounding subjects such as globalisation and climate change and pursue forms of protest and demonstration.
