Nicola Tyson

Selected Paintings 1993-2022

‘Nicola Tyson: Selected Paintings 1993-2022’ is the first comprehensive monograph of paintings by British-born, New York-based artist Nicola Tyson (b. 1960), collaboratively published by Sadie Coles HQ, Petzel and Nino Mier Gallery.

Known primarily as a painter, Tyson’s figurative works focus on the female body – presenting recognisable forms through an abstracted lens that morphs her subjects into fluid, dreamlike characters.

This richly illustrated catalogue documents the evolution of Tyson’s unique painterly language, featuring over 50 full-colour reproductions of works dating from 1993 to 2022, supplemented by close-up detail images, installation views and photographs of the artist in her studio.

The monograph also includes an essay by Jennifer Higgie, former editor of Frieze Magazine, that discusses Tyson’s feminist-informed approach to figurative painting and explores the backdrop of her coming of age in 1970s London and the legacy of Trial BALLOON – the queer collective artist-run space which Tyson co-founded in New York during the early 1990s.

Tyson’s paintings are in some of the top public collections in the world, including Tate, MoMA, Guggenheim, MCA Chicago, amongst others.

She will stage an exhibition later this year at Petzel gallery in New York of important early paintings from the 1990s, most of which are documented in this catalogue.
