Meschac Gaba

Museum of Contemporary African Art & More

‘Once the art world has overcome its complex about the reality of Africa’s development, African contemporary art will find its place and gain respect.’ (Meschac Gaba)

In his art, Meschac Gaba focuses on issues around intercultural balance and imbalance. In his Museum of Contemporary African Art he presents 12 different rooms which were produced separately for different institutions in several countries: for example, the Library for the Witte de With in Rotterdam, the Game Room for the SMAK in Ghent, the Wedding Room for the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Humanist Space for the documenta 11 in Kassel, and the Salon for the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.

This title is published alongside the exhibition of the same name, and it is the first time the exhibit has been shown in its entirety.

Initiated by Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel, Germany it went on to Museum De Paviljoens, Netherlands in 2009 and then to Centro Atlantico de Arte Moderno, Las Palmas, Canary Islands in 2010.

‘In Gaba’s art, money is a bearer of cultural identity and in its various manifestations a metaphor for interculturalism.’ (Michael Stevenson, 2009)
