Jochen Lempert

Phenotype

This is the first comprehensive monograph on the biologist who has worked as a photographer since the early 1990s.

Lempert’s photography highlights the similarities between the human and animal worlds, or the ephemeral appearances of waves, flocks of birds and volcanic clouds, in surprising poetry and minimalist casualness.

The resulting formations, patterns and structures are both modest and impressive artistic documents of the living world. Lempert presents 450 of his works, mostly composed in groups and sequences, from more than 20 years of artistic production.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition at Hamburger Kunsthalle Gallery of Contemporary Art, 22 June – 29 September 2013.
