Gustav Metzger / Hans Ulrich Obrist

The Conversation Series: 16

Gustav Metzger looks back on close to 60 years of creativity, repeatedly combining the practice of art with political commitment in the area of human rights and ecology.

Hans Ulrich Obrist met the old master of action art several times in London. Metzger told him about his tensional relationship to his teachers as a 19-year-old rebel, about his unperturbed political work and the invention of Auto Destructive Art in 1959, with which he has been associated all his life.

He gives a fascinating retrospect of his life – from his lifelong theme of the Holocaust, which he was able to escape at the age of 13, to projects he has not yet realized.
