In 1993 the Insel Verlag in Frankfurt published Richter’s book Text. Schriften und Interviews (Text. Writings and Interviews).

In addition to the bookstore edition, the publishing house produced a special edition that each contained an original drawing by Gerhard Richter, which makes this book a true art edition.

Richter produced the drawing in the form of a self-portrait in profile, which was bound into the book as its first page. Offset-printed on the reverse side of the drawing is a black and white photographic portrait of the artist dating from the 1960s.

This photograph is dark enough to show through the thin, white page of the book and could be used by Richter as a direct copy template for his drawing.

100 Selfportraits shows for the first time the 94 pencil drawings on paper by Richter that were not included in the special edition. These drawings are supplemented by six self-portraits which were included in the special edition.
