From Surface to Space

Malevich and Early Modern Art

On the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2009, the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden focuses on the work of Kazimir Malevich in the context of his time, and thus on the epoch immediately after its inauguration.

This large state exhibition on the Russian Avant-Garde marks a high point in the Staatliche Kunsthalle’s tradition as an established international exhibition venue outstanding for its numerous projects related to Russian art.

The presentation of works by Kazimir Malevich, one of the most important precursors of conceptual and minimalist art, is also in keeping with the Kunsthalle’s aim of linking contemporary tendencies in art with their great models.

The exhibition at the Kunsthalle concentrates on Suprematism’s fundamentally graphic thinking in planes and space. In addition to major works by Malevich, the show also contains works by many of his contemporaries such as Wassily Kandinsky, El Lissitzky, László Moholy-Nagy, Alexandr Rodchenko, Kurt Schwitters, and Vladimir Tatlin, as well as a selection of Russian revolutionary posters and ceramics of the time.
