Denis Wirth-Miller: Landscapes and Beasts

Denis Wirth-Miller

Landscapes and Beasts

This beautiful catalogue accompanies Firstsite’s exhibition ‘Denis Wirth-Miller: Landscapes and Beasts’, (1 October 2022 to 22 January 2023, Firstsite, Colchester, UK).

Artists Denis Wirth-Miller and Francis Bacon were friends for more than fifty years. However, while Francis Bacon is recognised today as one of Britain’s foremost painters, Denis Wirth-Miller is relatively unheard of.

The exhibition, the largest retrospective of Denis’s work to date, seeks to rectify this fact, showcasing the breadth of his paintings, and highlighting the influence he had on Francis and vice versa.

The catalogue includes essays from writer, and the exhibition’s curator, James Birch; critic, historian and curator Andrew Wilson; award-winning author Rachel Joyce and Jon Lys Turner the co-executor of the Denis Wirth-Miller and Richard Chopping Estate, as well as the author of Denis and Dickie’s biography, ‘The Visitors Book’.

Features a foreword by Firstsite director, Sally Shaw.
