Dean Kelland

Notes from Grendon: Two

‘Notes from Grendon: Two’ is published in the final year of British artist Dean Kelland’s residency at HMP Grendon, a Category B prison in Buckinghamshire.

The arrangement of this book mirrors the first book, ‘Dean Kelland: Notes from Grendon’ (2022) in its three parts (please note: the first book is now sold out and is not listed on our website).

The first section includes excerpts from Dean Kelland’s diaries and sketchbooks. The middle section includes an essay by Dr Henry Ward who reflects on the development of the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Studio at HMP Grendon. This space is of great interest to Ward as a teacher and artist with a long-standing interest in the value of creative practice in education settings. The final section is an interview between Nick London (pseudonym – a community member on D Wing) and Kelland, revealing two crucial devices for Kelland during his residency: masking and mirroring.

Published on occasion of Dean Kelland’s residency at HMP Grendon as part of the Art at HMP Grendon’ project managed by Ikon Gallery and funded by the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Charitable Trust.

With a focus on the development of the prisoners’ artistic practice, Ikon has opened the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Studio at HMP Grendon – a dedicated space for workshops, in printing and painting, and a changing programme of exhibitions, art historical and contemporary. The residency runs alongside a public programme of research symposia and events at Ikon, allowing a platform for public discourse on the role of art in criminal justice.

Dean Kelland is the second artist to take up the residency (2019-2023), following Edmund Clark (2014-2018).
