Carey Young

Subject to contract

Since the late 1990s, Carey Young has investigated the growing influence of international corporations on the individual in works that span a variety of media including video, performance, text, and installation, and which draw on the tradition of conceptual art.

Notably, she studies how language is transformed by corporate culture, or how contractual structures and their linguistic markers progressively pervade and reshape all domains of life.

Like a double agent, she immerses herself in the business or legal worlds, donning the appropriate attire and enacting recommended scenarios in order to examine and question the reach of each institution’s power, and its ability to shape our contemporary reality.

This publication is published in conjunction with Carey Young’s first solo exhibition in Switzerland, curated by Raphael Gygax, and offers an overview on her works from 2003 to 2010 for the first time. It includes contributions by the artist, Martha Buskirk, Raphael Gygax, and Tirdad Zolghadr.

Published with the Migros Museum of Contemporary Art, Zurich.
