Bill Fontana

Primal Energies

Bill Fontana, sound artist of the first generation, has been using sound as a sculptural medium since the 1960s.

This catalogue is published on the occasion of the solo exhibition ‘Primal Energies’ at the Kunsthaus Graz and for the first time offers a comprehensive documentation of his sound sculptures and radio projects worldwide.

“Inside the bulbous domed space of Kunsthaus Graz, sounds and views of sustainable energy production (earth and solar energy, wind and water power) are transformed into a multidimensional experience as visual and acoustic patterns – extended in space and time. Using prototypical space-mapping, the installation immerses the audience in a spherical vision of the internal processes of energy production, opening up a dialogue between nature and culture.” – e-flux journal

Including a complete index of his works as well as texts by Rudolf Friedling, Pedro Gadanho, Heidi Grundmann, Katrin Bucher Trantow, and others, and a conversation between Bill Fontana and Hans Ulrich Obrist.

In addition to installation views of the exhibition, the catalogue is extensively illustrated with archive material.

English and German text.

Published after the exhibition ‘Bill Fontana: Primal Energies and Sonic Projections’ at Kunsthaus Graz (13 March – 7 June 2020).
