Deep Time

Elaine Shemilt

Marking forays into the ‘deep time’ of the dry valleys of Antarctica and the Island of South Georgia, this limited edition artist’s book by Elaine Shemilt tackles the challenge of comprehending the vast temporal and physical landscapes that lie beyond the horizon of human culture.

Widely respected as an artist and researcher, Shemilt is a Professor of Fine Art Printmaking at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (University of Dundee) and Artistic Director of the Centre for Remote Environments.

Deep Time illuminates how Shemilt’s work at the intersection of Art and Science opens up critical questions that hover on the distant boundaries of knowledge and visual representation.

This publication features a collection of Shemilt’s recent sketches, collages  and prints alongside an interview with the artist by curator Sophia Yadong Hao and an analysis of the work’s philosophical references by artist and writer John Dummett.
