Callum Innes is one of Britain’s best-known abstract painters. Alongside his well-known oil paintings Innes has always made works on paper and in recent years has produced a significant body of watercolours.

History focuses on 20 new watercolours made especially for the Whitworth Art Gallery, placing them in context with Innes’ wider practice and the Whitworth’s long-standing interest in works on paper.

The layout of the publication follows the arrangement of the watercolours in the exhibition. Laid out in the order in which they were made, each watercolour follows on from the next evoking a chain of emotion and memory.

Callum Innes was born in Edinburgh in 1962 and was shortlisted for both the Turner Prize and Jerwood Prize in 1995. His work is held in public collections worldwide including the Guggenheim, New York; National Gallery of Australia; Tate, London; and Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. He lives in Edinburgh.
