Gabriel Kuri

sorted, resorted

Mexican artist, Gabriel Kuri (b. 1970) gathers his resources from a variety of sites before combining them in a manner that draws upon tradition of assemblage with a nod to Surrealist montage.

This beautifully designed catalogue shows, amongst others, new pieces produced for his Brussels exhibition, revealing both the diversity of Kuri’s formal approach and the consistency of his underlying themes: notions of commercial and cultural value, consumerism, as well as material and its poetic (mis)use.

Features essays by Brian Dillon (Reader in Critical Writing at the RCA in London, and UK editor of Cabinet magazine), Zoë Gray (Senior Curator, WIELS), Cathleen Chaffee (Chief Curator, Albright–Knox Art Gallery), and Dirk Snauwaert (Artistic Director, WIELS).

Published on the occasion of the exhibition, Gabriel Kuri: sorted, resorted at WIELS Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels (6 September 2019 – 5 January 2020).
