Sigmar Polke Starting from Willich

Sigmar Polke

Starting from Willich. Photographs 1973-78

‘The metamorphoses effected in the darkroom play tricks on reality, intentionally shifting the images into a sphere of uncertainty as they set off on the trail of mysteries and wonders. […] When we engage with the artistʼs photographic image-making, we must be willing to take leave of the unambiguous.’ – Laszlo Glozer

In 1972, Polke moved into the Gaspelshof in Willich on the Lower Rhine, which soon became an artist commune. From here he would set off on numerous journeys, often with his wife Katharina Steffen, whose collection is the source of these excellent photographs, most of which are published here for the first time.
