As a universal cultural asset, Christian visual tradition has long continued to develop within a secular context.
This publication, however, is not about sacred art or religious beliefs in general. It focuses on works of art that refer to Christian symbols or themes, but critically reflect upon them, transforming them and transferring them to new substance-related or aesthetic contexts.
The selection of works concentrates on art from the past 25 years, and encompasses paintings, works on paper and glass, sculptures, photographs, video, film, and complex installation.
Featuring the work of over 30 artists including: Bill Viola, Francis Bacon, Gary Hill, Katharina Fritsch, Paul Chan, Robert Rauschenberg, and Tacita Dean, among others.
English and German text.
