essays by Mathieu Copeland, Chris Darke, Agnieszka Kurant and Tom Morton

The French production company Anna Sanders Films has blazed a trail for a new breed of cinema – one made by visual artists that increasingly is finding its way into cinemas and film festivals. This book reflects on and features a selection of remarkable short and feature film works by leading artists at the forefront of this convergence of visual art and cinema. Among these are Charles de Meaux, whose film Shimkent Hotel was selected as one of the highlights of the 2003 Edinburgh International Film Festival and Apichatpong Weerasethakul, whose Blissfully Yours won awards at Cannes and at the 2003 International Film Festival, Rotterdam. Other Anna Sanders Films artists, meanwhile, have claimed some of Europe’s most prestigious visual art prizes recently. Pierre Huyghe was awarded the Hugo Boss Prize and Dominique Gonzales-Foerster the Duchamps prize, both in 2002. The book places this body of work into the contexts of film history and current visual art practice. Published by Forma / Les Presses du Réel English and French text.
