This book presents for the first time photographs taken by the Swedish free jazz pioneer Sven-Åke Johansson (b.1943) during his concert tours in the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s.
Cityscapes and landscapes, snapshots of everyday life, portraits of friends, fellow musicians and family are recorded as if in passing here, providing insights into an artist’s life ‘on the road’.
Autobiographical and historical moments merge into a subtle artistic self-positioning.
As in his music, Johansson brings seemingly insignificant details and situations into focus and elicits unexpected poetic dimensions from them. In this way, the photographs converge into an equally personal and laconic inventory of a ‘time past’.
