Sophie von Hellermann

Steps to Art / Stufen zur Kunst

New book on the work of Sophie von Hellermann ‘Steps to Art’.

Painter Sophie von Hellermann has depicted key scenes from Hanover’s history in her stunning, large-scale 17-metre high mural for the East Wing staircase of Künstlerhaus Hanover.

George V (King of Hanover), Sophie von der Pfalz (the artist’s namesake), and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz are among the individuals shown – all of whose portraits are painted directly onto the wall without preliminary tracings.

This volume chronicles this expansive work which took place as part of the ‘Steps to Art’ project series in 2017/2018.

It includes excerpts from poetic letters exchanged between the Princess and the scholar Leibniz, which the artist drew on when preparing her work.

English and German text.

‘Steps to Art’ is a series of projects by the Lower Saxony Foundation and the Hanover Art Association which presents specially developed projects for the staircase in the East Wing of the Künstlerhaus.
