Seven Sacraments of Nicolas Poussin

A book drawn from Neil Bartlett’s monologue performed in a Medical Lecture Theatre at the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel in July 1997. Bartlett takes a set of images of the body and reinvents them, connecting the past to the present in a way that makes us reimagine both.

Poussin’s great suite of 17th century paintings, The Seven Sacraments, depicts seven precise moments in historical time, the seven moments in which the sacraments of the Christian church were instituted, marking out the journey of the body from birth to death, from Baptism to Extreme Unction.

Artist, Robin Whitmore – whose blackboard drawings formed an integral part of the performance – has made a new series of prints to accompany this special setting of Bartlett’s text.
