Night in the Museum is a new publication from acclaimed British artist, Ryan Gander. This book explores the act of viewing, through sculptures, paintings and prints in the Arts Council Collection, the UK’s largest loan collection of post-war British art.
Pairing each figurative sculpture with a contemporary artwork, Gander sets up an objective relationship between the ‘viewing’ sculpture and the painting or print that they are gazing at, provoking questions about the role of the artist, the artwork and the viewer.
Containing brand new work created by Gander especially for the accompanying exhibition, a text by the artist and an essay on the gaze in contemporary art, Night in the Museum is a unique reflection on the role of looking in contemporary art.
Featuring the work of over 50 modern and contemporary artists, including: Jacob Epstein, Margaret Mellis, Richard Deacon, Liam Gillick, Henry Moore, Angela Bulloch, Anthony Caro, David Batchelor, Rebecca Warren, David Hockney, and Wolfgang Tillmans.
Published on the occasion of the Arts Council Collection UK touring exhibition in 2016: Longside Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park (16 July – 16 October 2016); The Gas Hall, Birmingham Museum (26 November – 12 February 2017); and the Attenborough Arts Centre, University of Leicester (25 February – 21 May 2017).
