‘The Hikers’ chronicles American artist, Rashid Johnson’s (b.1977, Chicago) solo exhibition, which was the eponymous collaboration between the Aspen Art Museum (USA), Museo Tamayo (Mexico), and Hauser & Wirth New York (USA).
The centrepiece of these exhibitions – which featured work from Johnson’s diverse practice, including his ceramic tile mosaics, collaged paintings, and sculptures – was Johnson’s film of the same name, an exploration of movement and ‘Blackness’, shot on location in the mountains of Colorado.
This lavish, large-format publication documents each presentation and a related performance at the Aspen Art Museum, alongside a beautiful retelling of the film in stills.
Also featured is a conversation between Johnson and choreographer Claudia Schreier, as well as insightful essays by curators Heidi Zuckerman and Manuela Moscoso.
Published after the exhibition ‘Rashid Johnson: The Hikers’ at Aspen Art Museum (4 July – 3 November 2019), Museo Tamayo (27 July – 10 November 2019), and at Hauser & Wirth New York (12 November 2019 – 25 January 2020).
