Rachel Whiteread

Venice Biennale 1997

In 1994, the year after she was awarded the Turner Prize, Rachel Whiteread won the prestigious international commission to make a Holocaust Memorial for the city of Vienna.

The memorial, which this book documents in detail, takes the form of a concrete cast of a library.

Its theme – the recording of absence and the constant struggle between remembering and forgetting – permeates the work exhibited on the Vienna memorial.

An extended interview with the artist, and an illustrated biography and bibliography are also included.
