For over forty years, the Dutch art collectors Pieter and Marieke Sanders avidly collected the work of relatively young and unknown artists from the Netherlands and overseas. Their art collection, that spans three generations of artists, is one of the most important in the Netherlands. OBJECT ONDER / OBJECT BELOW, SANDERS COLLECTION was realised on the occasion of the Sanderses’ gift to the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam of over hundred works of art in 2013 and the exhibition that followed in 2015. The publication, that has been developed in close collaboration with photographer Johannes Schwartz and graphic designer Julie Peeters, explores through photographs and texts the transformation that artworks undergo when they change context, from the intimacy of a private environment to the public realm of the museum.
With an essay by Cornel Bierens, a poem by Maria Barnas and an interview with the collectors.
