The British Council’s Architecture, Design, Fashion department has run the New Silk Road Programme for the last four years.
The series of programmes has focused on forging mutually beneficial links between the unique craft skills from Central Asia and the contemporary visual language of designers from the UK. The catalogue includes a timeline and description of these events.
The catalogue focuses in more detail on the most recent part of this project – a series of four creative exchanges in Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and the UK.
Fashion and textile designers from these countries undertook residencies which ranged from two weeks to two months.
Each designer is profiled in the catalogue, and each has written their reflections of their experience during the residency.
The catalogue includes documentation from each of the residencies, and is a source of visual inspiration reflecting Central Asian design traditions.
