Matthew Darbyshire

An Exhibition for Modern Living

This publication title derives from Darbyshire’s work for the British Art Show 7, An Exhibition for Modern Living and the format alludes to the catalogue from the landmark exhibition in Detroit in 1949.

In place of Alexander Girard’s text, writer and critic Tom Morton provides an overview of Darbyshire’s work and in place of Saul Steinberg’s New Yorker style illustrations, Adam Gale has produced a fold-out cityscape depicting architecture relevant to Darbyshire’s practice over the past decade, with cut-out cross-sections that reveal his sculptures and installations.

Darbyshire is teaching fellow on the graduate sculpture programme at the Slade School of Art.  He has exhibited in solo projects in the UK, Europe, Asia and the US.

He was selected for the Frieze Foundation commission in 2010 and major UK survey shows including the ICA’s Nought to Sixty (2008); Tate Britain Triennial Altermodern (2009) and British Art Show 7 Days of the Comet (2010).

Published on the occasion of the exhibition An Exhibition for Modern Living at Manchester Art Gallery, 25 September 2015 – 10 January 2016.
