Gerhard Richter

Das Kölner Domfenster

In 2002, the Cologne Cathedral Chapter approached Gerhard Richter for a new stained glass window for the south transept of the cathedral.

As this mediaeval building is a UNESCO world heritage site, the opportunity to create a work of art for a place of such art-historical significance was indeed a fascinating challenge for the artist.

Corinna Belz’s documentary accompanies Richter’s work on the Cologne Cathedral window over a period of more than two years up to its final completion and its festive inauguration on 25th August 2007.

This film documents the countless stages of development and all the challenges that arose in the realization of what was originally such a simple and yet convincing idea.

In this film the camera often assumes the role of a silent observer directly involved in the artist’s discussions and decisions.

Accompanied by a full colour, eight page booklet.
