Designed and edited by the artists, Self-Portraits has been published to accompany Elmgreen & Dragset’s third solo exhibition at Victoria Miro, in autumn 2015. For this body of works, the artist duo has appropriated wall labels describing other artists’ work and transformed them into art works in their own right.
Whereas such labels are usually printed on throwaway materials and on an unobtrusive scale, Elmgreen & Dragset’s labels are over-sized and made in time-honoured materials such as marble, paint on canvas, charcoal on paper and enamel paint on metal.
The title of the series – Self-Portraits – signals a personal aspect in which the titles of other artists’ work represent significant moments in Elmgreen & Dragset’s own lives, leading to questions of what a ‘self-portrait’ can be today.
The publication features a variety of visual and textual materials comprising documentation of their work and points of intersection with the ideas of others.
