This publication groups together for the first time Elizabeth Peyton’s portraits of musicians such as David Bowie, Pete Doherty, Jessye Norman, Kurt Cobain and Jonas Kaufmann in performance, and features oil paintings and works on paper from the last 20 years.
Expressed in these portraits is Peyton’s intensive focus on the vulnerable and at the same time expressive moment of artistic creativity: that moment in which the musician appears before their audience. As such the works are also a reflection on creativity per se and not least on her own creative process.
The photographs, snapshots from live performances of rock concerts and classical operas that underlie most of her works are also shown, and are presented in this exhibition catalogue alongside the artist’s works and with equal weighting.
Published on the occasion of the exhibition Elizabeth Peyton: Here She Comes Now at Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, 9 March – 23 June 2013.
