Henri Cartier-Bresson

In 1973 Henri Cartier-Bresson surprised everyone by ceasing to take photographs and turn back to his first passion – painting.

The exhibition Henri Cartier-Bresson: Drawings and Paintings addressed the question of whether Cartier-Bresson’s activities as ‘artist’ or ‘photographer’ were ever wholly separate, in spite of their obvious physical differences. The show included works from an extended period, including pieces from Cartier-Bresson’s days as a student.
