Desert brings together the photographs of Hannah Collins, Knut Maron, Michael Rovner, Thomas Ruff, Sophie Ristelhueber, Frederick Sommer, Verdi Yahooda and Bill Viola’s single monitor video, with an anthology of writings on the desert.

Behind this process lies the desire to examine the relationship between the image – textural and photographic – and the world for which it (the image) provides a trace. That world is the physical desert: a site reduced, from the European perspective at least, to a generic term covering the numerous but real topographic lands, apparently unable to support life; but which, nevertheless, provides a fertile metaphor for a range of physical, spiritual and psychological expereiences..
