David Medalla

Parables of Friendship

The plan for this book is to bring together previous unpublished writings of, and interviews with, artist David Medalla, alongside contributions by writers and academics including the Purissima Benitez-Johannot, Eva Bentheva, Gavin Jantjets, David Morris, Rasheed Araeen, amongst others.

This will accompany visual material from the Medalla archives, the archive of art historian Guy Brett and the exhibition ‘David Medalla: Parables of Friendship’ which took place at both Kunstverein Bonn and Museion Bozen in 2022.

The exhibition ‘David Medalla: Parables of Friendship’ is the first in-depth survey of the late-Filipino artist’s work to be presented in Europe.

It is a large-scale, two-part presentation which foregrounds Medalla’s vital avant-garde legacy and reflects on the spirit, ethos, energy and radicality of his practice.

Planned during Medalla’s lifetime, the exhibition has been realised in close collaboration with the David Medalla Archive in Berlin, following the artist’s untimely passing in December 2020.

English, German and Italian text.

Published to accompany the exhibition ‘David Medalla: Parables of Friendship’: 18 Sep 2021 – 30 Jan 2022 at Kunstverein Bonn, Germany; and also 9 Apr – 14 Sep 2022, Museion Bozen, Italy.
