David Austen

This publication marks the most comprehensive exhibition by David Austen for over 10 years.

It brings together a significant body of work including the distinctive paintings and works on paper for which he has become widely known, a recently made film and hanging sculptures, both of which signal a new and important departure.

For the artist, much of his source material is derived from observations of the everyday world around him; a chance remark, a book cover, the crime thrillers and literature he covets or a newspaper headline that, removed from its original context, becomes invested with new meaning.

Within Austen’s work, the landscape of text, repeated abstract patterns and graphic forms becomes a measure of time – from the months it may take to finish a canvas to the moments to create a watercolour of one of his tiny figures.
