Canan Tolon

Sidesteps

To mark the occasion of the exhibition Canan Tolon: Sidesteps, Parasol unit foundation for contemporary art has produced an extensive publication offering an overview of the artist’s work to date.

The exhibition, Tolon’s first major solo show in a London institution, provides in-depth insight into her work from 1986 to the present day.

It includes Futur imparfait, 1986–1999, a series of 33 ink-wash and crayon figurative drawings that were recently acquired by the British Museum. This will be the first time they are shown together in the UK.

The book includes full colour, high resolution imagery of both works in the show and many other additional images which illustrate Tolon’s fascinating progression as an artist whose aim is to make paintings that are apparently recognisable, yet elude description.

The publication includes two essays by Bill Berkson and John Yau, who each give a personal account of their relationship to Tolon’s work, as well as an insightful interview text between the artist and curator, Ziba Ardalan.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition at Parasol unit, London, 15 January – 16 March 2014.
