Infinite Folds

‘Barbara Chase-Riboud: Infinite Folds‘, published on occasion of the exhibition at Serpentine Gallery, London.

With a career spanning over seven decades, Barbara Chase-Riboud’s innovation in sculptural technique and materiality is characterised by the interplay between folds of cast bronze or aluminium and coils of wool and silk which are knotted, braided, looped, and woven.

Combining materials with different qualities such as hard and soft, light against heavy, and tactile versus rigid, the artist’s monumental sculptures explore themes of memory, monuments and power.

Features text from the artist, as well as British curator and Director of the forthcoming V&A East, Gus Casely Hayford; American art historian and lawyer, Erin L. Thompson; Professor of art and art history, Joseph Manca; Swiss art curator, critic and art historian, Hans Ulrich Obrist; Director of Curatorial Affairs and Public Practice at Serpentine Galleries, Yesomi Umolu; and British artist and writer, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. Includes an interview with the artist by Hans Ulrich Obrist.

The catalogue also features an illustrated chronology as well as a selection of the artist’s own poetry and writing.

Published on occasion of the first UK solo exhibition of pioneering artist, novelist and poet Barbara Chase-Riboud (b. 1939, Philadelphia, USA, lives and works in Paris):  ‘Barbara Chase-Riboud: Infinite Folds’, 11 Oct 2022 – 10 Apr 23, Serpentine Gallery, London.
