Anthea Hamilton

Sorry I'm Late

Sorry I’m Late is a monographic publication about British artist Anthea Hamilton’s work, published by firstsite on the occasion of her solo exhibition (firstsite, 8 September – 25 November 2012).

Featuring a newly commissioned essay by Tate Curator of Contemporary Art & Performance, Catherine Wood and an extended interview between Hamilton and firstsite’s Senior Curator Michelle Cotton, the book also includes images of previous projects and the exhibition at firstsite.

Hamilton’s energetic collages explore the surreal and seductive nature of images. Her sculptures, installations and videos make reference to the history of art, cinema and performance, playfully inserting the viewer into a three-dimensional composition.

Sorry I’m Late sees work installed across the building with firstsite’s galleries dramatically transformed into a series of environments – from a film studio to a restaurant kitchen. Soft sculptures, Perspex figures mounted on wheels, a giant zoetrope-inspired portrait of John Travolta and a medieval cocktail that is claimed to cure cataracts are amongst the works that comprise the exhibition.

Anthea Hamilton was shortlisted for Turner Prize in 2016. Her work was included in British Art Show 8 in 2015/16.
