Published to coincide with the Firstsite exhibition of Essex based painter Simon Carter, this extensive show reveals the artist’s unique working process, surprising palette and fresh view of the landscape.

Carter’s gestural paintings are fuelled by rigorous daily drawing at the beach, near Frinton-on-Sea. The artist captures changes in the weather, landform and atmosphere with confident line drawings. He describes this as ‘using the landscape to think with‘.

This exhibition brings together seminal canvases, works on paper, a walk-in sketchbook and objects from the artist’s studio.
