African Ceramics. A Different Perspective

Anders Gesehen: Afrikanische Keramik aus der Sammlung des Herzog Franz von Bayern

In July 2017, HRH Franz, Duke of Bavaria permanently donated his extraordinarily exquisite and diverse collection of ceramic objects dating from the 19th to the 21st century to Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum, Munich.

Starting in September 2019, Die Neue Sammlung is honouring this generous gift with a major exhibition at the Pinakothek der Moderne. This beautiful, extensive catalogue, in which international experts provide insight on individual aspects and areas of the collection, completes the presentation.

This large-format publication provides information on 250 objects from across the wealth of forms and functions of African ceramics, as well as the different contexts of their creation.

Instead of a presentation organised by region, as is customary in ethnographic museums, this book offers a design-historical examination of the vessels and figures, starting from the objects themselves. This approach enables a new, fresh look at ceramic production in Africa, examining form, function, decor, and materiality.

Published on occasion of the exhibition, Anders Gesehen: Afrikanische Keramik aus der Sammlung des Herzog Franz von Bayern / African Ceramics. A Different Perspective at Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (27 September 2019 – 29 March 2020).
