Alessandro Mendini

Alessandro Mendini

This title accompanies a major exhibition at Neues Museum on the Italian designer Alessandro Mendini, one of the outstanding figures in Italian and international design.

After studying architecture, Medini became a theorist of Italian avant-garde design and as co-founder of the alternative design college ‘Global Tools’, editor-in-chief of Domus and other magazines, and as the key person behind the Studio Alchimia design collective he brought a strong streak of irony to bear on the rigid world of industrial design.

His utopian visions have been realised in architecture: the Groninger Museum, Naples’ Villa Communale and Hanover’s Medienzentrum; and in his 2D and 3D artworks, design objects, and designs for ornaments, patterns and selected materials.

Created by Mendini, the exhibition features some 80 pieces from over 40 years of his work. Published on the occasion of exhibition Alessandro Mendini at Neues Museum – State Museum for Art and Design in Nuremberg, 22 July – 23 October, 2011.
