Albert Oehlen

German artist, Albert Oehlen has been a significant figure in contemporary art since the 1980s.

By bringing together abstract, figurative, collaged and computer-generated elements on the canvas, he continues to explore an inventive diversity of artistic approaches.

Through expressionistic brushwork, surrealist gestures and deliberate amateurism, the artist engages with the history of painting, pushing its essential components of colour, gesture, motion and time to bold new extremes.

This publication comprises a commissioned essay by art historian, curator and academic, Dawn Ades, whose writing provides an exciting and fresh perspective on Oehlen’s work; an insightful letter as artwork by artist André Butzer; as well as a new conversation between Oehlen and Artistic Director of the Serpentine Galleries, Hans Ulrich Obrist.

This is a beautiful large-format book, with loose leaf pages, a folded poster and transparent plastic cover wrap.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition, Albert Oehlen at Serpentine Gallery, London (2 October 2019 – 2 February 2020).
