Extinction Beckons

Mike Nelson (born 1967) is best known for his large-scale immersive environments that tell multi-layered narratives while playing with and pushing the boundaries of space and scale.

Although Nelson’s extraordinary output has cemented his position internationally, his oeuvre has not previously been explored in a major publication.

In a dense documentation of the work, juxtaposed with installation views and pages of the artist’s handwritten manuscripts, the publication which is rich in imagery provides a guide through work of the artist, enabling the reader to immerse themselves in Boghiguian’s artistic cosmos.

A text authored by the artist herself condenses the themes and thoughts that have flowed into her works.

The Now Voyager

This publication accompanies Rebecca Warren’s first solo exhibition in Vienna at Belvedere 21 (15 July – 16 October 2022) and features works made especially for the show.

Rebecca Warren engages in an expressive game with female anatomy — ambiguously humorous and grotesque, figurative and abstract, monumental and filigreed.

She became known to a wider audience in the late 1990s, with her large-scale unfired clay sculptures which were tortuously modelled, scraped, gouged female forms, often with parts—a hand, a breast, a calf, a ponytail—nightmarishly or comically exaggerated.

‘Horror in the Modernist Block’ presents new and recent work by 20 UK and international contemporary artists exploring the relationship between architectural modernism and horror.

Essays and texts by Melanie Pocock, Acting Artistic Director; Lucy Mounfield, Assistant Curator; Stuart Whipps, artist; and Joshua Comaroff, architectural historian and designer.

This first monograph on Louisa Gagliardi (b. 1989, Sion, lives in Zurich) introduces her specific voice within the landscape of contemporary painting.

She draws freely from the codes of painting as well as contemporary graphic design and advertising in order to rethink questions of figure and ground, flatness and depth, dimensionality and translucence, the enigmatic and the banal, the digital imagery and the painterly marks.

Her paintings exist as reflections: internally, of artist and viewer, and of the rapid acceleration of technology in our visualized and socialized worlds.

Kapwani Kiwanga (b. 1978, Hamilton, Canada, lives in Paris) traces historical narratives, excavating and considering the global impact of international relationships—including colonialism—in its manifold aspects, and how it permeates contemporary culture.

With a background in anthropology and social sciences, Kiwanga embraces a subjective reading of the archive, exploring ideas around belief, mythology, and impermanence.

Kiwanga co-opts the canon; she turns systems of power back on themselves, both in art and in parsing broader histories.

Water Under the Bridge

Vittorio Brodmann’s pictorial worlds are characterized by figures whose emotional turbulences seem familiar.

They are creatures, often grotesque, strange, melancholic, desperate, the whole range of humanity with all its contradictions.

His images are full of wit, but they do not make one laugh out loud.

‘Water Under the Bridge’ is the first comprehensive monograph on Brodmann’s consistent devotion to painting.

Ways of Attaching

A comprehensive catalogue on the work of New York artist Rosemary Mayer (1943–2014).

‘Ways of Attaching’ provides an overview of the artist’s work, moving from early conceptual experiments of the late 1960s through to textile sculptures and drawings made in the early 1970s, before focusing on propositional and durational performances and temporary monuments made from 1977 to 1982.

Approximations. A House and an Artist´s Workshop in Molenbeek (AgwA + Maria Evelia Macal Guerra)

This book unfolds the design and realization process of Verbiest, an architect’s house and an artist’s workshop in Molenbeek (Belgium) by Brussels-based architecture office AgwA with Maria Evelia Macal Guerra.

A set of unpublished work documents including sketches, scale models, plans, and pictures is combined with a set of texts by AgwA’s partner Harold Fallon.

Beyond the singularity of this remarkable project, the book demonstrates the critical relevance of construction, energy and circularity in architecture theory and discourse.

Mapping the World

The publication ‘Mapping the World’ provides an overview of the artistic work of the American artist Matt Mullican over the past fifty years.

Matt Mullican is considered one of the pioneering representatives of the so-called Pictures Generation, which in the mid-1970s examined the influence of mass media images on everyday perception and thus declared them to be an integral part of artistic debates.

Pastoor van Ars Church, The Hague.

The Pastoor van Ars Church that was built in 1969 by Aldo van Eyck in The Hague is one of the few significant church buildings to emerge from the second half of the twentieth century.

This book sheds light on the unique architectural and spatial qualities of the building.

The author, Francis Strauven, who previously wrote an extensive monograph on the ideas and work of the Dutch architect, pays particular attention to the intensive design process, which he has reconstructed using more than a hundred design sketches from the Van Eyck archive.

Continent

This publication assembles materials relating to Dora Budor’s exhibition Continent at Kunsthaus Bregenz (19.03.–26.06.2022), with the intention of providing different perspectives on the project while realizing an autonomous object within Budor’s broader body of work.

Central to the book are four texts that elaborate on the exhibition in different ways: an essay by curator and writer Richard Birkett, a text by author Amelia Groom, a republishing of an essay by architect and historian Robin Evans, and an interview between the artist and the director of Kunsthaus Bregenz, Thomas D. Trummer.

Essays from a Lifetime in the Arts

One of the most dynamic painters of his generation, Secundino Hernández is acclaimed for his spirited enquiry into the language, history and enduring potential of abstraction.
