The Exhibition – Volume 3

During lockdown, Grayson Perry, one of Britain’s foremost artists, brought the nation together through art, helping them to unleash their creativity as part of his Channel 4 TV series ‘Grayson’s Art Club’.

Due to the popularity of the programme, it continued into a third series, in 2022 with a range of new themes for the artists and special guests to explore – Love, Heroes & Heroines, Normal Life, Inside My Head, Holidays, Future, and The Queen.

Get Rid Of Meaning

American author Kathy Acker was one of the most influential writers of the 20th century.

Working through an experimental and avant-garde tradition, she wrote numerous novels, essays, poems, and novellas from the early 1970s to the late 1990s. As a postmodernist, plagiarist, and post-punk feminist, she continues to inspire generations of writers, philosophers, and artists.

The book GET RID OF MEANING, edited by Anja Casser and Matias Viegener, is the first comprehensive publication on Acker’s work from an artistic and literary perspective. It includes previously unpublished material from Acker’s personal archive and other collections.

ECCE HOMO

Focusing on one specific and lesser-known aspect of the manifold practice of General Idea, the Canadian collective founded in Toronto in 1969 by Felix Partz, Jorge Zontal—both deceased in 1994—and AA Bronson, this volume highlights their drawing practice.

It offers a generous insight into 125 carefully selected drawings realized between 1985 and 1993—the period the collective spent in New York—spanning the diversity and innovation of their singular approach to drawing and art.

The publication’s design is inspired by George Grosz’s legendary Ecce Homo album (1922–1923) because, according to AA Bronson, “the Anti-Semitism in Grosz’s narrative is mirrored by the homophobia in ours.”

The Biography

Natalie Lettner’s extensively researched biography faithfully details the incredible life of Maria Lassnig, spanning nine decades from her beginnings in Austria to her status as internationally renowned artist.

It chronicles Lassnig’s journey and struggles in remaining true to her bold, singular artistic vision while fighting gender stereotypes and paving the way for future generations of artists.

This catalogue, for Joanna Pousette-Dart’s first London exhibition with Lisson Gallery, frames her work through the various landscapes, artists and locations that have inspired her.

In two essays by art historians Nancy Princenthal and Pepe Karmel, the shaped paintings of Pousette-Dart are read both as products of their environment – from the Galisteo Basin in New Mexico to the gardens of Roccolo in Northern Italy – as well as of their hard-won process – being continuously worked over and modified through numerous stages of painterly application and re-thinking.

With sampling, shuffling, and montage taking centre stage, the practice of Swiss-American artist Christian Marclay (*1955) has been anchored in the universe of sound since the end of the 1970s.

An eminent conceptual artist and recipient of the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for his landmark 24-hour video installation ‘The Clock’ (2010), he is equally fascinated by all aspects of popular music and avant-garde music, Hollywood cinema, and experimental film.

This comprehensive monograph, authored by art historian Richard Shiff, serves as a multifaceted interpretation of Jack Whitten’s art-making and philosophy of life.

Vividly illustrated and ranging freely through the course of the artist’s six-decade career, Shiff’s text illuminates the distinctive character of Whitten’s thought and the art it generated.

Pardó é papel: The Glorious Victory and New Power

This catalogue features Maxwell Alexandre’s ‘Pardo é Papel’ series: depicting collective portraits celebrating the empowerment, self-esteem and prosperity of Black people.

The artist has claimed his spot as one of the most notable young artists emerging from Brazil.

Up until 2017, he was a professional skater, yet an introduction to contemporary art while studying design at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro completely changed his trajectory. He presented his first solo show in 2018.

Double Positive

Published on the occasion of Sylvie Fleury’s ‘Double Positive’ exhibition at the Bechtler Stiftung in Zurich (October 2022–March 2023), this book offers an unprecedented insight into the artist’s 1990s fashion collection, which she confronts with Walter de Maria’s monumental ‘The 2000 Sculpture’ (1992).

Conceived as a fashion look book, featuring silhouettes styled by Ursina Gysi, photographs by Marc Asekhame, and annotations by fashion historian Matthew Linde, this publication takes us back to Fleury’s beginnings as an artist, recalling her landmark early 1990s artworks: unopened shopping bags filled with freshly acquired luxury products displayed as readymade sculpture.

Refuge

‘Jai Chuhan: Refuge’ presents her ongoing painting practice, up to 2022, and complements Asia Triennial Manchester 2018 exhibitions by Jai Chuhan: ‘Refuge’ at Gallery Oldham (15 September – 24 November 2018); and’ Remodel: Painting Studio’ at HOME, Manchester (15 – 21 October 2018).

Critical texts explore Chuhan’s paintings and cultural contexts, from curatorial and art history perspectives including transcultural aesthetic influences inspiring Chuhan’s position as an Indian-born British artist.

From Dying to Living

The Thai artist Korakrit Arunanondchai combines personal experiences with global political developments.

His video works, installations, paintings and performances juxtapose the clamour of a complex, globalised world with the serenity of dimensions beyond the physical. The subject matter is characterised by dualities such as spirituality and technology, memory and amnesia, contemplation and ecstasy.

Gluklya & Murad

‘Two Diaries: Gluklya & Murad’ is the story of an unexpected encounter.

A migrant artist (Gluklya) meets a migrant writer (Murad) in a Dutch asylum centre, a former prison on the edge of Amsterdam.

Together, they come to understand what migration means, what language allows and how art in its different forms can serve as a cry of anger and a path to self-knowledge and peace.
