Sites for Sculpture in Modern Brazil

Brazil has been a major site of modernity over the last half-century for all art forms, but arguably, some of the most striking innovations have been in sculpture.

By using the first São Paulo Bienal in 1951 as a starting point and proceeding through to the present day, this exhibition highlights some of the key moments of experimentation to have emerged.

Ideas of what could be defined as sculpture were expanded from figuration to abstraction and via intervention, performance and film through to recent, less rigid classifications.

In addition, the selected works will illustrate how sculptors have fully explored potential sites to locate their work outside the formality of the gallery or museum.
