This book presents Polaroids of doubles, photos of preparatory work-studies in which assistants, usually staff members who are otherwise in the background, stand in for the expensive supermodels.
What is interesting about these ‘stand-ins’ is the stance of the people portrayed. As they are only stand-ins, they react differently or not at all to the camera. The mood they express ranges from that of simply waiting to boredom through to melancholy; in only a few of the pictures do the stand-ins make use of the chance to show themselves off in an over-the-top manner.
The absence of protagonists, the special mood in which people allow themselves to be photographed without consciously posing, makes this collection of Polaroids, originally intended as preparatory shots, a fascinating photo book offering a glimpse behind the scenes.
