Allen Ruppersberg Sourcebook

Reanimating the 20th century

The Independent Curators International (ICI) Sourcebook series is dedicated to contemporary artists’ personal perspectives on social, political, and cultural issues.

Edited by an artist, each book in the series is a collection of primary research materials consisting of rare archival documents, artwork studies, and excerpts of landmark publications selected from their own archive annotated with personal commentary.

The Sourcebook series follows the development of an artist’s oeuvre through the very material that inspires and
influences it. Each book is a catalyst to further understand contemporary artistic practice, particularly by artists whose practice challenges conventional art histories, while contributing to its development.

For the second Sourcebook in the series, ICI has invited Allen Ruppersberg to cull through his archives stored between Cleveland and Los Angeles.

This publication is the first to look at a range of Ruppersberg’s work from 1978–2012. Turning the microscope on to nine important works from his career, the publication delves into the influences and research that led to each of the works.
