British designer Thomas Heatherwick reveals staircase design in NYC

‘Vessel’, a giant sculptural staircase ‘centrepiece’ has just been revealed by British designer Thomas Heatherwick. It is to sit at the centre of Manhattan’s West Side Hudson Yards development, within a public plaza and gardens, and among 16 skyscrapers. It is part of New York City’s largest development since the 1930s Rockefeller Center.

According to Heatherwick, ‘The goal became to lift people up to be more visible and to enjoy new views and perspectives of each other…’ and, ‘The idea is that it will act as a new free stage set for the city and form a new public gathering place for New Yorkers and visitors.’

If you are interested in Heatherwick’s design practise, have a look at these two titles that we hold on our list: Thomas Heatherwick: Extrusions and Dandelion: The Making of the UK Pavilion at Shanghai World Expo 2010.
