Sterling Ruby survey show at Winterpalais, Vienna

You may have heard of Los Angeles-based, and highly influential artist Sterling Ruby, but you may not know that he was born on an American Air Force Base in Bitburg, Germany in 1972.

Considered one of the most ‘enigmatic, controversial and unfailingly unpredictable’ of artists, Ruby currently has a show on at the Winterpalais in Vienna (8 July – 16 October 2016), which is the former baroque-style home of Prince Eugene of Savoy.

Here the artist critically reflects and ‘responds to the baroque building with new conceived paintings that cover entire rooms like tapestries of the famous battle scenes series’.

A book produced alongside represents a survey of the artist’s work, and includes: a literary essay by Mario Codognato, photo collages produced by the artist, and overviews the 36 works included in the exhibition.
