Playground fun to be had at BALTIC

Soon to open at BALTIC is an exciting exhibition, The Playground Project, all about playground spaces which until the 1980s were, ‘places for social experiments, risky projects and spectacular sculptures’.

Appealing to the ‘inner child’ within us all, the exhibition harks back to often forgotten playground initiatives where everyone involved (architects, urban planners, artists, parents, children) was encouraged to have their very own imaginative adventure and create places ‘to run, hide, climb and imagine’.

Often a focal point for ideas about ‘creativity and control’, ‘education and childhood’, ‘urban planning and public space’ and ‘architecture and art’, playground design (pre-1980s) resisted the conventional and took its own, often anarchic design pathway.

For those of you who are really interested in this exhibition, we have the book that goes alongside – The Playgound Project. Published by JRP/Ringier, it is available now!

In keeping with the playful theme, there’s a very special children’s preview for this show on Thursday 14 July 2016 (14.00 – 17.00). Go on, have some fun!
