This new Duane Hanson book, produced to accompany the artist’s exhibition at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, presents a selection of previously unpublished black and white photographs from the 1970s and 80s.

These show visitors interacting with Hanson’s remarkably life-like sculptures, and Hanson in his studio making casts from models and finishing works.

These photographs reveal the extraordinary techniques employed by Hanson and the timeless power and fascination that his works still hold over us.

This publication includes a foreword by Serpentine Galleries Directors Julia Peyton-Jones and Hans Ulrich Obrist and two newly commissioned texts.

Artist and author Douglas Coupland has written a personal response to Hanson’s work that is a testament to its enduring legacy and Ruba Katrib’s essay Surface Identity provides insightful links between Hanson’s practice and its relationship to ongoing concerns about the presence of the body in contemporary art.
